TRANSPORTATION CONNECTIVITY

Investing in safer streets, cleaner buses, and better bike infrastructure so getting around SLO is safe, affordable, and accessible for everyone.
Getting around SLO should be safe, affordable, and accessible for everyone, whether you’re walking, biking, rolling, or taking transit. That means designing our streets around people, not just cars, and making consistent, equity-focused investments that expand opportunity and reduce emissions.
In 2024, SLO Transit marked 50 years of service with expanded routes and nearly 598,000 trips taken. We froze fares, introduced discounted passes for K–12 students, and began transitioning our fleet to clean electric buses, with four already in service and six more on the way. We’re on track for a 50% zero-emission fleet by 2026. Through the SLO in Motion initiative, we’ve upgraded sidewalks, added protected bike lanes, redesigned intersections, and improved lighting to make everyday travel safer and more reliable.
Building on that progress, I will push for concrete, people-first transportation policies at the city level. That includes prioritizing a network of protected bike lanes that safely connect neighborhoods to schools, jobs, and downtown; expanding transit frequency on core routes so buses are a practical, dependable option; and exploring fare-free or income-based transit programs to reduce barriers for working families. I support safer street design through traffic calming, lower speed limits in high-use areas, and Complete Streets standards that center accessibility for seniors, people with disabilities, and families with young children.
We can also better align transportation and housing by encouraging transit-oriented development and reducing minimum parking requirements where appropriate, while still ensuring access for those who need it. At the same time, I’ve heard clearly from our downtown community about parking. We responded by lowering parking rates and launching a modern, unified mobile payment system, and I will continue working with residents and local businesses to strike the right balance.
The goal is simple: a transportation system that is safer, cleaner, and works for everyone. I will keep listening and advancing solutions that make it easier for people to move through SLO and fully participate in our community.
