CHILDCARE

Working to ensure every SLO family has access to high-quality, affordable childcare, because when parents and caregivers can fully participate in the workforce, our entire community is stronger.

This issue is deeply personal to me. When my child was young, the lack of affordable childcare kept me out of the workforce for more than a year, and I know many families in SLO face the same barriers. That experience shapes my commitment to building a city where working families are supported and where people of all backgrounds can put down roots and thrive.

Accessible, affordable childcare is essential to advancing equity and strengthening our local economy. At the city level, that means taking concrete action. I will champion policies that make it easier to open and expand childcare centers by updating zoning and streamlining permitting, and by encouraging childcare in new housing developments, commercial spaces, and public facilities. I support targeted grants, fee waivers, and public-private partnerships to help local providers stay open and grow, especially those serving infants, toddlers, and working-class families.

We can also lead by example as a city, by exploring childcare options for municipal employees, leveraging public land for childcare facilities, and partnering with employers, schools, and community organizations to expand capacity. At the same time, I will advocate for stronger regional and state collaboration to bring more resources into our community.

When we invest in childcare, we are investing in economic opportunity, gender equity, and the long-term health of our community. It is one of the most practical and impactful ways we can support SLO families today and build a more inclusive future.
