Keeping SLO on track for carbon neutrality by 2035, protecting our open spaces, investing in clean energy, and building a more climate-resilient city.

SLO has set some of the most ambitious climate goals in the country, and meeting them is not optional. It is a commitment we owe to our community, our region, and future generations. Reaching carbon neutrality by 2035 requires urgency, accountability, and sustained public investment.

Together, we’ve already made real progress. Our Lead by Example Plan puts the city on track to cut operational emissions by 84% by 2029. We’ve expanded EV charging at community parks, begun transitioning our transit fleet to clean electric vehicles, secured a $7.7 million grant for groundwater cleanup, and earned national platinum recognition for water conservation leadership. We also completed the $13 million Mid-Higuera Bypass, a long-awaited project that reduces flooding risk while restoring critical habitat and strengthening climate resilience.

Looking ahead, I will continue working with the next council to accelerate climate action at the local level. That includes expanding and protecting open space, preparing for longer and more severe droughts, and investing in nature-based solutions that safeguard our water and ecosystems. I will also support policies that attract and grow clean technology and green jobs, ensuring the transition to a sustainable economy benefits working people in SLO.

Protecting our environment means protecting our future. It is one of our community’s defining values, and I will continue to center it in every decision we make.
